Pulp Fiction (1994)

This Quentin Tarantino Film is rated in the top 100 movie list of 2005 for its incredible storyline involving four main characters as their lives come together in a story of love and redemption. Time 100 movies claimed, "Tarantino's multipart murder comedy is (unquestionably) the most influential American movie of the 90s."

The main theatrical elements which stand out in this film are the direction and script writing by Tarantino. As the director, Tarantino recruited the perfect cast for this film. Actors like Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta played a key role in the success of this film by bringing to the table characteristics which appear strong and serious as mobsters but can also portray a somewhat comical aspect of the film. An example of these characters appearing bold and ruthless while still being comical is when Jackson and Travolta are picking up Mr. wallace's briefcase. The men in the room outnumber both Jackson and Travolta yet they still control the situation while taking their food and threatening them in wallace's defense.

This scene is also a good example of Tarantino's script writing. One of the best characteristics of his films is the commedy he adds to his serious, often violent scenes. The scene previewed above ends in the killing of all of the men in the room. Beyond all of the violence Tarantino shows a comical relief when a studdering man cannot answer jules' question. After studdering many time Jules yells, "what country are you from?!" only to hear the repeated studdering of the man who fears death. Jules replies, "What aint' no counrty i ever heard of! Do they speak english in what!?" This scene is a great example of how the script writing can attract viewers. It not only shows the action intended by this mobster movie but also incorpotates the abilities of the actors and screen writers to keep viewers interested with the comedy in the story.

King Kong (1933) Journal #2

This 1933 thriller interested audiences of all kinds with its fictional persuit of affection and suspense. The directors of this film, Marian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, created a metaphorical re-telling of the classic story of The Beauty and The Beast. The writers of this historical film, James A. Creelamn and Ruth Rose, implemented multiple themes in this film. Two of the themes i found important in this film were, the stuggle for survival and natures wonders. The Stuggle for survival is everlasting in this film as the main chracter Fray Wray(played by Ann Dorrow) is at Kongs mercy. Another central theme is what the movie is based on as a whole. Natures wonders refers to the great King Kong as he stuggles to keep his precious possession.

The origional King Kong is a dramtic, fictional, story of affection in which one of natures most spectacular beasts is found in the jungle with an exteme curiosity of the unknown. This beast is found when a fearless director wished to make a movie of the century as they explore unchartered islands in hope of something no one has seen before and that is exactly what they got. This gigantic beast rules the jungle as seen when he fights a gigantic snake exemlifying his power. This movie begins with a big twist which is unexpected to most in this terrific film with special effects fit for academy awards.

Critique The Critic

The Critic-
In this review the critic does not show the slightest appreciation for any of the Bourne series. In this movie Jason Bourne is still on the run from the very people who made him. In this series Bourne is always chasing the same goal, to find out his true identity. Bourne is faced with numerous problems he must overcome while being chased by federal officers and secret agents.

The critic uses the example "I know Google claims it will soon be able to see the wax in your ear, but how does the CIA pinpoint Bourne so precisely and yet fail again and again and again to actually nab him? You'd think he was Bin Laden." (EBERT) to create a comparison between real life and this series while highlighting the unrealistic idea of surviving situations that exceed reality. Although i feel like the critic displays rather good points the use of this fictional story line seems appropriate considering the intensity of his life. Without this element the movie would be dull and boring.

After reading this review the critic seemed to have had a larger impact on my opinion than i would imagine. While reading this review i found myself agreeing to many of the points the critic made which i hadn't even considered. For instance the critic's statement about how unrealistic Bourne's series of events is. Although many of the positions Bourne is seen in may be far fetched i never found them unattainable for the this mastermind.

Overall my opinion of the review is that it is too narrow minded and the focus was emphasized on less important ideas than possible. In my opinion i find that this movie is an action packed thriller that does a good job influencing the audience to enjoy its frictional events that make the viewer feel like he/she is in what seems to be an everlasting struggle.

VIDEO EMBEDDING

Gladiator Fight Scene

The first important element I noticed in this clip was the director’s uses of both the long and medium shots. The Long shot in this clip is used to show the enormity of the coliseum and also to create the feeling of a third person view of the act being seen. In the long shot Russell Crowe is completely visible with some background containing hundreds of people and his fellow gladiatiors as they enter battle. This scene is what really can manipulate the eye to be feeling as if it is right in front of everything. The medium shot used by the director does a good job of showing facial expressions and the shadows on the men’s faces. The distinct image of each character can appear powerful and confident.
Another important element seen in this clip is the camera angle. The director uses both high and low camera angles. Throughout the clip there is a lot of change between both of these angles. The low angles seen throughout the clip show the power of unity seen between the gladiators as well as the strength of appearing large and ready to fight. The high angles seen throughout this clip are in turn supposed to represent the insignificance of the people they are fighting.

My First Homework Assignment

Gladiator is an action packed film comming from the perspective of a triumphant general named Maximus. The character maximus in this film was played by Russel crowe who is constantly in a struggle of love and vengance. In this film Maximus knows what he must do in order to survive in turn showing a very motivated side of maximus which illustrates his desire for revenge. In the ending scene of this exciting film it cuts back to a memory of his fields and a glimpse of his wife and son signifying his success in his very own last moments. As the movie is coming to an end it also wraps up a romantic love story.

I really enjoy this movie for three reasons. First of all it is filled with action packed scenes in which maximus must complete tasks to stay alive. Another thing i found very interesting was the way the director used low key lighting in sensitive scenes to set mood of sincerity and mystery. The final thing i like about this movie is that way the the director uses long shots and medium shots to create the feeling of different moods.

Critics are saying that this movie's depiction of the primal emotions in which our lives are based on positively affects the film as a whole as well as a historical film audiences havn't seen in years.
